So I’m getting back on the wheel1- is it like riding a bike after 8 months off?

Not the wagon wheel but the potter’s wheel- and the Substack wheel.🥴

I’m new to ceramics so before and after each session, I try to spend 10-15 minutes tuning in. Mental bookends to help the process. Anything from sketching, journaling, writing, and ideating, to expressing frustrations, new techniques and glaze combinations I’m gambling on, or new clays I would love to get muddy in. My scribbled collection of notes, techniques, formulas, and discoveries picked up along the way are all tucked into this 4x6 handy-dandy-cutie.

Golden light enters the sunroom where it shines on the small 4x6 ceramics notebook, the 3 pens and 2 markers chosen and a small card to showcase the palette and lines of each pen. Okay, a little shoutout for this notebook because it truly is one of my favorites but of course it comes with a story….

This One Time while exploring Durham, I stumble upon this converted house-turned art supply shop.2 This wasn’t like the time I stumbled upon the pottery sale from the cardboard on the side of the road that led me into any empty house with a handwritten sign pointing to the basement to watch my step. No, no, no… This felt slightly different but with the same outcome.

I slink into the entrance where I’m welcomed by the happiest of messes. I imagine if I was a cartoon, heart bubbles would have popped out of my eyes and melted onto the floor. A charming space with incredible attention to detail in the goods they were curating- it was love at first sight. I make a mental note to set a timer to avoid losing track of time and still push back my coffee date because I know I will. The walls are covered in love- flyers for community events, artist showcases, kiln shares, creative meetups, written notes and local artisans of all mediums from different backgrounds displaying their deepest passions. A showcase of vulnerability. Culture. Art. Diversity. I let out a deep sigh and feel my shoulders ease with comfort- I know I’m in a safe community.
